Frizzy Typeface

1. Project Context

Category: Typography & Type Design / Branding Applications

Target Audience: Design-conscious audiences including students, creatives, and young adults who engage with expressive, visually driven typography. The typeface also targets brands and industries related to beauty, fashion, and lifestyle, where bold and playful display type can enhance visual identity and storytelling.

Background: Frizzy is a custom display typeface inspired by the form of hair barrettes and the natural movement of hair. By translating everyday objects into expressive letterforms, the project explores how physical materials and organic shapes can inform typographic design. The typeface balances playfulness and structure, using irregular, fluid forms to create a strong visual identity while maintaining legibility. It is applied across multiple contexts—including packaging, advertising, signage, editorial design, and digital media—to demonstrate versatility and cohesion, positioning the typeface as both a functional tool and a conceptual design system.

  • How can the organic, irregular forms of hair and everyday objects be translated into a functional and legible typeface?

  • How can a highly expressive display typeface maintain clarity and usability across a range of design applications?

  • How can the typeface balance playfulness and personality with a sense of professionalism and structure?

  • How can a single type system adapt across multiple contexts (packaging, signage, editorial, digital) while remaining cohesive?

  • How can the design communicate a clear conceptual foundation rather than feeling purely decorative?

4. Design Solution

The final typeface translates the physical form of hair barrettes and the organic movement of hair into a cohesive system of expressive letterforms. Rounded edges, irregular curves, and soft transitions create a sense of fluidity, while consistent structural rules maintain readability and usability.

As a display typeface, Frizzy is designed for high-impact applications, where its personality and visual presence can enhance communication. The typeface is applied across a range of formats—including packaging, advertising, signage, editorial design, and digital media—to demonstrate its adaptability and cohesive identity.

By combining object-based inspiration, organic form, and typographic structure, the project presents a typeface that is both playful and functional, highlighting the potential of everyday materials to inform innovative design solutions.
